Towns Near Cesky Krumlov

There are a number of local towns which you can visit by public transport from  Cesky Krumlov. And considerably more places to visit if you have a car  or if you combine a bike with a train.

This website concentrates on those towns that are easily accessible. For castles and other attractions go to the trips webpage on left. There is information about other towns such as Jindrichuv Hradec, Trebon, and Tabor in our Czech holiday website

Ceske Budejovice

South Bohemia’s largest city Ceske Budejovice has a lot to offer. Like Cesky Krumlov it has a well-preserved old town centre, with one of the largest town squares in Europe. Unlike Cesky Krumlov Ceske Budejovice boasts  fine buildings from all centuries - there are fine Art Nouveau and Art  Deco buildings as well as Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic. It is home to the South Bohemia Regional Museum, the Ales Gallery of Modern Art, and  of course the world-famous Budweiser Budvar Brewery, which offers a guided tour at 2pm plus a heritage centre. Ceske Budejovice is a good place to go shopping, having a much wider selection of shops than Cesky Krumlov. Many of our tours are based in Ceske Budejovice.

To get to Ceske Budejovice - either take a bus or the little train from Cesky Krumlov.

Volary

Volary is famous for its Alpine-style wooden houses, built by Tyrolean settlers in the area There is a museum in one of them about life in the  town and its history. Next to the town cemetery on a small hill  overlooking the town, you will find the graves of 95 mostly Jewish women who died here at the end of a death march from Nazi concentration camps in Poland. It is a moving reminder of this area’s more troubled recent  history. You can read about our visit there on Adventures in the Czech Republic.

Volary is at the other end of the train line, although do check the train’s destination before mounting.

Horice Na Sumave

Horice Na Sumave is famous for its passionplays, which are performed in an amphitheatre above the town every summer. There is a small museum about  the passionplays and a short trail with information which takes you up  to the theatre. Horice Na Sumave is also a good place to start several  walks

Horice Na Sumave is accessible by bus, train or cycle trail from Cesky Krumlov.

Rozmberk Nad Vltavou

Rozmberk nad Vltavou is almost like a mini Cesky Krumlov. It has a smaller  castle built on the rock cliffs that overlook the river and the small  town. This is the starting place for a day's canoe trip down the Vltava  River to Cesky Krumlov.

Canoe hire companies will deliver you and you canoe to Rozmberk. If you prefer you can take a bus.

Vyssi Brod

The town is situated on the upper right bank of the Vltava river in the  foothills of the Bohemian Forest, in a romantic landscape amidst thick  forests. Vyssi Brod Abbey is well worth a visit (see Trips page), but there are also some good walks starting in the town, including an  industrial archaeology trail with information boards, a walk up to the  Devil’s Cliff, and along the river to the nature reserve at Devil’s Torrents. Canoe trips also start here. Our walks tour includes a Vyssi Brod walk.

Vyssi Brod is serviced by bus from Cesky Krumlov.

Horni Plana

Horni Plana is a small town on the edge of Lake Lipno. It is popular with Czech, Dutch and German tourists and has in summer a seaside feel about it. It is famous as the birthplace of local poet  Adalbert Stifter. It is a good place for walks - you can take a ferry  across to the Sumava National Park, or follow the Adalbert Stifter circular trail, which gives some lovely views across the lake. Horni Plana Tourist Information Centre are very helpful.

You can get to Horni Plana by train or bus from Cesky Krumlov

A number of other towns are serviced by shuttlebus tours, check locally for details.
