Day Trips from Cesky Krumlov

castle

The area  around Cesky Krumlov is awash with old castles, abbeys and other  attractions. In this website we focus on places you can easily visit by  public transport or by bike.

Divci Kamen Castle

The imposing ruins of Divci Kamen Castle (above) are set above the Vltava River. There is a trail which runs from Holubov to Trisov and brings you to the foot of the castle. The walk is stunning and takes a couple of hours  including the castle visit.

There are train stations are Holubov and Trisov.

Zlata Koruna Abbey

The Abbey at Zlata Koruna is a fine example of Bohemian gothic  architecture, sited on a headland that is surrounded on three sides by  the Vltava river.

Zlata Koruna has a train station, follow the road to the Abbey (your route is the E10 red route which continues to Divic Kamen). Buses to Ceske  Budejovice stop on the main road at Zlata Koruna/Rajov, walk through  Rajov and then along the narrow road to Zlata Koruna. Alternatively you  could canoe to Zlata Koruna.

Blansky Les

The Blansky Les (Blansko Forest) is an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty  which extends north from Cesky Krumlov. The forest makes great walking - one waymarked trail is a round trip from Brloh and takes in the ruins  of Kuklov Monastery and the even more ruined Kuklov Castle.  Alternatively you take the chair lift from near Holubov to the top of  the Klet mountain and walk down.

There are frequent buses to Brloh from Cesky Krumlov. The train stops at Holubov.

Vyssi Brod Abbey

The 15th century Cistercian Abbey of Vyssi Brod overlooks the upper reaches of the River Vltava. The highlights of the abbey tour are for us the  cloister gallery full of lovely gothic and baroque statues, the  stunning library and the church itself. A visit can be combined with a  walk in the countryside.

You can get to Vyssi Brod by bus from Cesky Krumlov.

Olsina

Lake Olsina is a hidden gem. The lake is artificial, built as a fishpond in  the 14th Century. Whilst at 170 hectares it is definitely a lake rather  than a pond, Lake Olsina is still harvested every two years when the lake is drained. There is an exhibition centre in a Renaissance fishpond manager’s house, which explains about the  lake, its history, carp fishing and its natural history. Olsina should  be visited at weekends, because it sits on the edge of the Boletice  military zone which is closed on weekdays. At weekends the area opens up to walkers and cyclists.

To get to Olsina, take the train to Hodnov from Cesky Krumlov

For information about the Sumava National Park and Lake Lipno please see their dedicated pages.

There is far more to see in South Bohemia. CzechTours offer both escorted  tours of attractions, including our medieval Hussite tour where you will visit plenty of fortified towns and castles (visit our website http://www.czechtours.co.uk) and stays in cottages or hotels  (visit our website http://www.czechholiday.co.uk)  Contact us on admin@czechtours.co.uk
